ChatGPT vs Claude for customer replies

Updated 24 October 2026

Task: Customer FAQ replies

Direct answer

Use Claude when the reply must stick to a long policy page you paste into a Project. Use ChatGPT when you already pay for it and your rules fit on one short page. Either way you send the message yourself. We have not run a side-by-side quality test, so this is a fit guide, not a score.

ChatGPT

Best for. A short policy you already keep beside an inbox you are triaging in the same product.

Cost. Free tier, or Plus at $20 a month before tax as listed in October 2026.

Setup. A Project, the policy pasted in, and a line that flags anything not on the page.

Limit. It will still invent a helpful extra if the instructions are soft. Auto-send features, if offered, stay off.

Claude

Best for. A longer refund and delivery page that the draft has to follow closely.

Cost. Free tier, or Pro at $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually, as listed in October 2026.

Setup. A Project with the current policy, replaced in full when prices change.

Limit. Same human rule. A long context window is not a reason to let it reply alone.

The working playbook is customer replies in ChatGPT. The same steps transfer to Claude: one document, a refusal to invent, you send the mail. Receipts and social posts on this site use Claude for a different reason, which is reading a batch or sticking to a note. That is not a verdict that Claude wins email.

Whichever you pick, the UK data point is the same. The customer's message is personal data leaving your mailbox for a US company. Your privacy notice should say so if you do this as a habit, and special-category data stays out of the paste.

Which to pick

  • Choose Claude

The policy is longer than a page, or you have watched a short-context draft wander off it.

  • Choose ChatGPT

You already pay for Plus for the inbox, and the rules you will stand behind fit on one screen.

  • Choose neither yet

The refund rule is not written down. Write that before you pick a model. The model is not the hard part.

Questions

Which one writes better English?

We have not scored that, and a fluent sentence that invents a refund is the failure that matters. Judge the draft against your page, not against a vibe.

Can I use both?

You can, and you will then have two places where an old price can hide. One Project, one policy, one mailbox. Add a second tool only for a reason you can name.
