Upwork is a marketplace for hiring freelancers and agencies. For a small UK business, the use is a one-off job such as setting up an automation, connecting an AI chatbot to your tools, or getting help to write down a process. What Upwork lists. The homepage says posting jobs is always free and that you can get proposals, screen or interview, then hire and pay when work is done. Its popular searches include "Automation expert for n8n workflows" and "AI chatbot developer for support automation". The pricing page menu lists AI integration developers, chatbot developers, automation experts, n8n experts and AI consultants, and outcome shortcuts such as "Automate my workflows" and "Handle customer support with AI". Upwork says it has "18+ million freelancers across 180 countries" and is "trusted by 800,000 clients". Those are Upwork's claims, and AgentShed has not checked them.
What it costs. The client pricing page lists two plans. Basic is for occasional, project-based work and shows a 5% service fee. Business Plus is for ongoing work and shows a 10% service fee, with access to what Upwork calls Expert-Vetted talent, "the top 1%". Both add a one-time contract initiation fee on new contracts, from $0.99 to $14.99 on Basic. Business Plus lists no initiation fee except on fixed-price contracts of $100 or less. The same page's FAQ gives other Basic-plan figures, including 7.99%, and a discounted 3% for eligible U.S. clients paying by checking account. All prices are in US dollars.
Before you hire. Write the brief first: what goes in, what comes out, and what done looks like. Give a freelancer access only to the accounts the job needs, and change the passwords or revoke access when it ends.
