AI Voice for Small Businesses: Voiceovers, Phone Greetings and Audio Versions of Your Posts
Desk research by Penelope Voss
29 October 2026

In short: AI voice turns written text into spoken audio, so a small business can make a short voiceover, a phone greeting or an audio version of a blog post without a microphone. Try it free, but check the licence first: ElevenLabs says its free plan can't be used commercially. For business use, record yourself or read the paid terms.
What does AI voice do?
Text-to-speech software reads a script aloud in a natural-sounding voice. You paste the words, pick a voice, and download an audio file. ElevenLabs is one tool that does this. Its pricing page lists text to speech on the free plan. We haven't hands-on tested it, so this guide is based on its published pages.
Small businesses most often reach for it for three jobs.

Which three small jobs are worth trying?
1. A short voiceover
A 30-second explainer, a product demo or a social clip. Write the script first. Keep sentences short, because they sound better read aloud.
Made-up practice script for a pretend bakery: "Welcome to Hazel and Finch Bakery. Our sourdough is baked fresh every morning. Order by Thursday for weekend collection." The business and its details are invented for practice.
2. A phone greeting
A recorded message callers hear before they leave a message. This is a plain recording that you upload to your own phone system, not an AI that talks to callers. Check that your phone provider accepts an uploaded audio file before you start.
Made-up practice script: "Hello, you've reached Hazel and Finch Bakery. We can't take your call right now. Please leave your name and number, and we'll call you back."
3. An audio version of a post
Paste a blog post or guide into text-to-speech and offer a listen option for customers on the move. Edit first: links, tables and "click here" don't read well aloud. If you already repurpose text with AI, our social repurposing playbook is a good starting point for tidying the script.
What is the licence catch with free plans?
This is the point most guides skip. ElevenLabs' help centre says:
- The free plan does not include a commercial licence and cannot be used for any commercial purpose.
- If you publish content made on a free plan, you must credit ElevenLabs by including "elevenlabs.io" or "11.ai" in the title.
- All paid plans include a commercial licence, as long as you don't use beta services and follow its terms.
- Content made outside a paid subscription, before or after one, can't be used commercially. If you upgrade later, make the audio again on the paid plan.
In plain terms, a free account is for hearing how it sounds and drafting your script. A voiceover for your shop's video or a greeting on your business phone would very likely count as commercial use, but read ElevenLabs' terms or ask them if you are unsure. That is a relay of ElevenLabs' own wording, not legal advice. We haven't researched what each paid plan costs for your needs, so we're not recommending one here. If you decide to use it, read the current pricing and terms first.
How do the options compare?
| Option | Cost to start | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Record it yourself | Free (phone voice memo) | Greetings, short videos, anything with your own voice | Quiet room helps, and you can re-record any time |
| ElevenLabs free plan | $0, with a monthly credit allowance (10,000 credits when we read the page) | Trying voices and testing your script | No commercial licence, and published audio needs a credit to ElevenLabs |
| ElevenLabs paid plans | Monthly fee (check the pricing page) | Business voiceovers once you've decided you need them | Licence terms, plan limits and prices change |
| AI phone answering (see our Lindy playbook) | Check the vendor's pricing | Taking a message when you can't answer | A different job from a greeting. It talks to callers, so test it with practice calls first |
The Lindy playbook is partly tested: its prompts were checked with sample data using an AI standing in for Lindy, and Lindy itself and a phone number were not tested. You can read the Lindy tool page for the plans we read.
Where is AI voice heading?
Voice is moving from "read this text" towards "hold a short conversation".
- ElevenLabs launched Eleven Realtime on 20 October. It says each model is a complete voice agent, so builders no longer join up separate speech-recognition, turn-taking and speech parts themselves. It lists phone, web and WhatsApp among the channels.
- On 27 October, Alibaba Cloud listed Qwen-Audio-3.1-Realtime-Flash, a real-time speech model with function calling and web search.
For a small business, the likely effect is more phone-answering tools to compare, and perhaps lower prices over time. We can't promise either. For now, a recorded greeting and a clear script are enough.

What doesn't this guide cover?
Cloning a real person's voice and recording phone calls both come with rules that vary by country and by sector. We haven't covered them here. If either matters to you, get proper advice for where you operate.
How we made this
AI-assisted, and fact-checked against ElevenLabs' and Alibaba Cloud's own pages on 29 October 2026. We haven't hands-on tested ElevenLabs, so we make no claim about how its voices sound or how easy it is to use. The scripts above are invented for practice. The ElevenLabs links are affiliate links, and we only recommend free options here. See how we research a playbook.
FAQ
Is AI voice free for a small business? You can try it free, but ElevenLabs says its free plan can't be used commercially. For business use, record yourself or read the paid terms first.
Can I put an AI voice on my business phone line? A recorded greeting is just an audio file, and many phone systems accept an upload. Check your provider's rules first, and remember the commercial-licence point above.
Will customers know it's an AI voice? We haven't tested how natural any voice sounds. Listen to a sample yourself and play it to someone you trust before you use it.
Do I need to give my customers' details to a voice tool? No. Voiceovers, greetings and audio posts need only your own script, so use practice text while you learn and never paste in customer details.
Your next step
Write a 40-word phone greeting using the practice script as a model. Record it on your phone first. If you want to compare it with an AI voice, try the free plan, and treat that version as a draft only.
